Christian Education Ministries

The Christian Education Ministries of First Presbyterian Church, Davenport, are comprised of quality religious educational experiences for all people from infancy through adulthood. First Church's Christian Education Committees seek to teach, train and encourage participants to apply what they have learned and experienced at church in the world.

Child Protection Policy
In order to provide a safe, secure, and nurturing environment for all children and youth, First Presbyterian Church adopted a Child Protection Policy in January, 2001. All paid church staff and all volunteers who work with children or youth are screened and asked to read and sign a "Code of Conduct." A policy brochure is available by contacting office@fpcdavenport.org.

Little Angels - Birth to 2 1/2 years (not potty trained).

Little Saints - 2 1/2 years through age 4 (potty trained). Nursery and child care services are available from 8:30 AM until NOON each Sunday. There are three care groups:

  • Infants (children not yet mobile)
  • Crawlers (children just learning to walk)
  • Toddlers (children who are toilet-trained)
The toddler care group includes an educational program that accomodates different age and developmental levels. Four-year-olds will still participate in Cherub Choir. A Child Care Task Force has developed and reviewed safety procedures for these programs. Sign-in procedures are required of parents. A beeper is given to the parent so he/she can be reached while in the building. You will find a warm and friendly welcome at First Church.

Children's Church - Five-Year-Olds (Kindergarten) through Third Grade
These children begin their Sunday in the 9:00 AM service of worship and are dismissed at approximately 9:20 AM to Sunday School activities in the Chapel. The children experience a time of worship at a child's level of learning. At Children's Church, the kids are led in an age-appropriate exploration of the same scripture lesson that is read in the sanctuary. Please ask your children what they learned in Chilren's Church and see how it compares with the sanctuary sermon.

Grades K-7: The Promised Land:
The Workshop Rotation Model Sunday School

First Church continues its exciting Workshop Rotation model (Sept.-May) of Christian education. Based on the multiple intelligence theory, the program assumes that, instead of having one intelligence measured with a numerical I.Q., people possess at least seven distinct kinds of intelligence or ways of knowing and learning in different degrees. These different ways of learning which guide the Workshop Rotation Model are:

1. Linguistic/verbal
2. Logical/mathematical
3. Visual/spacial
4. Musical/rhythmic

5. Body /kinesthetic
6. Introspective
7. Interpersonal
These different ways of knowing are apparent in the variety of ways Jesus taught his followers.

How the Workshop Rotation Model Works
Children rotate to a different workshop each Sunday within a four- or five-week unit. These workshops relate to one or more of the ways of knowing. Introspective and interpersonal intelligence's correspond to two crucial Christian disciplines: reflection and relationship making. These are interwoven throughout all the workshops as the children relate to each other and reflect on their spiritual learning in their own spiritual journal filled out each week. For a more detailed description of each unit in the curriculum click here.

First Presbyterian has developed five distinct environments for the workshops:

The Oasis - the storytelling room
E.D.E.N. Studio - the video and multimedia room
The Painted Desert - the art room
Creation Station - the science room
Pharaoh's "Phun" Room - the first grade room
Mission Control - the computer lab with 6 NEW computers
Each of these rooms, and the learning that takes place in them, reflects the goals of the curriculum:

  • Trusting and believing in God's grace
  • Experiencing the fruits of faith
  • Integrating faith and life
  • Seeking spiritual growth

  • Nurturing faith in community
  • Holding life-affirming values
  • Being advocates for social change
  • Acting and serving to display God's love

Youth and Young Adult Ministries

The youth of First Presbyterian Church (grade 6-12) have regular Sunday morning classes during the 10:00 AM education hour.

Confirmation I
Open to students in the 8th grade or high school students who have not yet taken Confirmation I. Class meets from 10:05 AM - 10:55 AM on the third floor of the Folwell Education Center, each Sunday morning.

Confirmation II
Class meets from 10:10 AM - 11:10 AM on the third floor of the Folwell Education Center, each Sunday morning. The Confirmation II class gives the youth of First Church the opportunity to study, in depth, the Presbyterian Church, its history, theology, style of worship and mission. The students have requirements to be filled: diaries on Bible readings; participation in mission and church governance experiences; a retreat with the whole group; and visits to other houses of worship. The youth are welcomed into church membership at the Confirmation Commissioning service of worship in early May.

High School Class
High School students attend a Sunday Morning High School Class
called "Explorations and Expressions of Faith" - mini-courses
(each 2-4 weeks) that help answer the question, "How does this
Christianity stuff relate to the rest of my life?."

Adult Christian Education (ACE)

Classes for adults are generally held on Wednesdays from 6:30 - 8:00 PM and on Sundays from 10:05 - 10:55 AM during the academic year.

All adult education classes are open to both members of the congregation and the community at large. Please plan to join us each week and invite your neighbors and friends to attend as well.

In depth Biblical studies are offered on various week day mornings and evenings which require an attendance and reading commitment.
