In the life of the church, relationships matter. In the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), we often talk about being a covenant community—a people who walk together in faith and support one another as we grow in our relationship with God. That journey begins early, and the friendships formed in childhood can play an important role in helping young people stay connected to the church.
That’s why creating fellowship opportunities for tweens—our 3rd through 5th graders—is so important. These preteen years are a time when children begin forming deeper friendships and discovering where they belong. When the church provides space for them to gather, laugh, play games, share snacks, and simply spend time together, we are doing more than filling time on the calendar—we are nurturing Christian community and helping children feel known, welcomed, and connected.
Providing these opportunities is also one way we live out the promises we make at baptism: to guide and nurture our children with love and prayer. Friendships formed during these years can help ease the transition into youth group (6th–12th grade). When students already know one another and feel comfortable in the church community, it becomes easier to keep showing up and growing in faith together.
Throughout the year, we plan periodic fellowship gatherings specifically for our 3rd–5th graders. These events give tweens a chance to connect outside of Sunday morning, strengthen friendships, and experience church as a place where they belong. Our hope is that these early relationships will continue to grow and help create a natural bridge into the youth group years ahead.
Our next opportunity for tweens to gather will be March 29 from 12:00–2:00 PM, and it promises to be a fun and unique experience. Students in Grades 3–5 are invited to a behind-the-scenes church adventure where they will explore some of the hidden and unique spaces in the building—including an up-close look at the organ pipes and other areas that many people don’t usually get to see.
Pizza will be provided for lunch. Please RSVP by March 26 to Marty or Abby at cefy@fpcdavenport.org, and include any dietary restrictions or food allergies so we can plan accordingly.
We hope this afternoon of discovery, fun, and fellowship will be the beginning of many meaningful friendships and experiences together.
